Stars and Stripes Block

Stars and Stripes
10" block

Welcome to the Red White and Blue Blog hop! I hope you are finding lots of inspiration as you make your way through all the wonderful blogs.  My block is fairly simple...contains one of my favorite blocks...the Sawtooth star.  I will try to provide cutting and sewing instructions for you...please bear with me!

Cutting Instructions

For the Stripes unit:
Cut six red rectangles   1 1/2" X 5 1/2"

Cut four white rectangles   1 1/2" X 5 1/2"

For the Star unit:
A.  Cut eight white background squares   1 3/4" X 1 3/4"
B.  Cut eight white background rectangles  1 3/4" X 3"

C.  Cut sixteen blue squares  1 3/4" X 1 3/4"
D.  Cut two red squares  3" X 3"

Sewing instructions
Use a 1/4" seam
You will make 2 of the "stripe" or railfence blocks.
Sew together in the order as shown in the picture.  Press towards the red.
Each unit should measure 5 1/2" square.

Now you will make 2 of the sawtooth star units.
First make 8 "flying geese" units from B and C.  To make one flying geese unit, place a blue square (B) atop a white (C) rectangle with outer edges aligned. (right sides together)  On the back of the top square marek the diagonal and sew on this diagonal marking.  Cut off the excess seam allowance.  Press the remainder towards the corner.  Repeat this with another blue square on the other end of the rectangle.  Make eight of these.

Now lay out all of the units as shown below.  Sew together, pressing the top and bottom row seams to the center and the middle row to the outside.  You will make 2 sawtooth blocks.
They should measure 5 1/2" square.

Now you are ready to sew your block together.  Place the railfence units and the sawtooth units together as shown below.  Now your block is finished!  It will measure 10 1/2" square.

Now what will you make with your block?  I would love to see what you come up with!
Here is a quick and easy mug rug made with just a sawtooth unit and a railfence unit.

Or maybe just a simple wall hanging or banner with your choice of a border.

Or...a quilt to be donated to Quilts of Valor......

If you would like a chance to win this mug rug, please leave a comment telling me
what the 4th of July means to you.
At the end of the Blog Hop, I will announce a winner.

Be sure to visit these wonderful and inspiring blogs today for more Red White and Blue inspiration.

And tomorrow you will be able to visit the following  increcredible blogs for even more fun and inspiration.

Wishing all of you a safe and happy holiday with family and friends!

It means freedom. We have the freedom to speak our minds and do often, we can worship as we choose, and we have the right to disagree with our government without threat of punishment. And you get to see really awesome fireworks.

Thank you for sharing your versions of 'stars and bars' - very cute idea to make it into a mug rug. I stick to home on the 4th as I really don't like crowds and noise. And our fireworks are all canceled due to the dry weather. Think instead of s'mores we will be gathering supplies to make banana splits.

July 4th-----means that I have freedom. Your block is cute.

KatieQ said...

My feelings about the 4th of July have more to do with my personal life than patriotism. When I was growing up, school ended the last week of June. The 4th of July was the beginning of a summer of freedom. My cousins lived near a lake and I would go to stay with them for a few weeks. I loved my aunt, uncle and 4 cousins and it was a very happy time for me. When my children were little, the 4th marked the beginning of our summer at the beach. I loved having them home from school and dreaded when they went back in September. Now, the 4th fills me with nostalgia and fond memories of summers past.
Thanks for the great tutorial.

One of my favorite blocks!! You made a great choice and excellent tutorial. How did you do that? I don't know how to make drawings like that? I'm soooo computer challenged when it comes to the finer points such as tutorials, graphs, etc... I love the mug rug!! Who doesn't love mug rugs?! The 4th reminds me of my childhood and the Hometown fireworks with my Dad and Uncle putting on the show!!

Love your block and mug rug. For me the 4th reminds me of what my Dad in WWII and my brother in Vietnam did to help keep our freedom. The personal sacrifices were great for them and our families. I hold each of our soldiers close to my heart because I know their lives as well as their families will never be the same. Prayers for all of them.

Love your block. 4th of July is a day for me to get together with family and celebrate. Sharon - thank you for the beautiful block and great instructions. I like the Sawtooth Star, too. To me, the 4th is almost as important as Christmas and Easter....almost....because it really was the birth of this special nation, for which I feel a deep responsibility and stewardship; particularly at this very troubling times. We are praying mightily for this country and its people as we watch the division of the wheat and the tares, even as we speak, and contemplate Lot's lot. If this nation falls, where will refugees seeking liberty go? God help us, please.

When I think of July 4th, I think of my mom (who I'm happy to say is still with me). She's the original flag-waver, queen of the red, white and blue and the believer in the great potential that this country still has.

Scrapbook-ChickADoodle said...

Love the block. There is something sew inspiring to see RWand B in a sawtooth pattern. The mug rug is terrific. Thanks for the opportunity to win.

The 4th means the opportunity to show our appreciation to all those who have helped to keep our nation free and to celebrate what our country means to us. I love to see how everyone puts out their flags and all the RW&B decorations in yards and along the roadways in town. The town celebration of carnival, food, band concert and fireworks encourages patriotic fellowship.
